Rohan Bopanna’s bid for a US Open mixed doubles title came to an end on Tuesday as he and his Indonesian partner, Aldila Sutjiadi, fell in the semifinals. The eighth-seeded duo lost a hard-fought match to the American pair of Donald Young and Taylor Townsend, 3-6, 4-6.
The American pair’s victory keeps Townsend’s hopes of winning two doubles titles at the tournament alive. Young, who is retiring after the US Open, will be looking to finish his career on a high note. Townsend and Young will now face the third-seeded Italian pairing of Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori in Thursday’s final.
Bopanna and Sutjiadi had reached the semifinals after a thrilling quarterfinal victory over the fourth-seeded duo of Matthew Ebden and Barbora Krejcikova. The Indian-Indonesian pair won a tight match 7-6(4), 2-6, 10-7 on Monday night.
Despite the mixed doubles loss, Bopanna’s US Open 2024 wasn’t a complete disappointment. He had earlier reached the third round of the men’s doubles competition alongside his partner Matthew Ebden, the second-seeded pair. However, they were defeated by the 16th-seeded Argentine duo of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni.
Meanwhile, Taylor Townsend continued her successful run in the women’s doubles competition as well. Teaming up with Wimbledon champion Katerina Siniakova, they reached the semifinals with a straight-set victory over the eighth-seeded team of Demi Schuurs and Luisa Stefani. They will face the unseeded duo of Kristina Mladenovic and Zhang Shuai in the semis.
The other women’s doubles semifinal will feature the seventh-seeded pair of Lyudmyla Klchenok and Jelena Ostapenko against the tenth-seeded team of Hao-Ching Chan and Veronika Kudermetova.
In the men’s doubles competition, the semifinals will see the seventh-seeded pair of Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson face the 13th-seeded team of Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Winthrow. The other semifinal will pit the fourth-seeded duo of Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic against the tenth-seeded team of Kevin Krawletz and Tim Puetz.
