A truck carrying a substantial load of chemical powder overturned on the slip road near the Patlipada flyover on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, causing significant traffic disruption on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred around 8 am, as the truck was headed towards Haryana. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, leading to the overturn. Fortunately, he sustained injuries but was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital.
The accident, involving approximately 35 tonnes of chemical powder, has caused major traffic delays, impacting peak hour commutes. The slip road has been temporarily closed and traffic diverted onto the flyover. Authorities are currently working to move the overturned truck to the roadside to clear the obstruction and restore normal traffic flow. However, due to the nature of the cargo and the scale of the incident, restoring the flow of vehicles is expected to take several hours.
This accident marks the third such incident involving heavy vehicles on the Ghodbunder Road stretch within the past 24 hours. The road is a critical link for traffic traveling between JNPT, Konkan, Nashik, Gujarat, and the Western Suburbs of Mumbai. It also serves as the primary connection for Thane city to Mumbai.
Commuters have expressed concerns about the recurring incidents and the lack of adequate infrastructure to manage the heavy traffic on the stretch. They have highlighted the need for separate lanes dedicated to heavy vehicles and improved traffic management systems to prevent similar occurrences.
The incident has caused significant inconvenience to commuters, especially those traveling to Mumbai. School buses have been particularly affected by the delays. Authorities are working diligently to clear the stretch and restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.
