Pakistan’s cricket team has suffered a major blow, plummeting to eighth position in the ICC Test rankings following a first-ever series defeat to Bangladesh. This historic loss, which saw them lose both Test matches in Rawalpindi, has resulted in their lowest rating points since 1965, barring a brief period when they were not ranked due to insufficient matches.
The ICC stated on its website that Pakistan’s back-to-back losses at home to Bangladesh have seen them drop below the West Indies to eighth place with 76 rating points. Prior to the series, Pakistan occupied sixth position in the rankings.
While Bangladesh did not receive a significant promotion after the series, they have strengthened their position in the World Test Championship cycle 2023-25. The Tigers’ 2-0 series victory has propelled them to fourth place, behind India, Australia, and New Zealand.
Bangladesh’s performance in the second Test, where they chased down a target of 185, was the third most successful chase for any visiting team in Pakistan. They gained 13 rating points, but still remained behind Pakistan in ninth place.
Bangladesh has secured three wins and three losses in six Tests, earning them 45.83 percentage points and 33 points in the World Test Championship. Their focus now shifts to a two-Test series against India, which commences in Chennai on September 19.
In the World Test Championship, teams are ranked based on the percentage of points they win, with 12 points awarded for a Test victory, 4 for a draw, and 6 for a tie.
