The Legend of Zelda series is known for its constant evolution, and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is no exception. This new title takes a bold step forward, introducing a unique summoning system that adds a layer of strategic depth to the classic Zelda formula. While Echoes of Wisdom embraces its roots, it feels like a natural progression from the open-world exploration and inventive gameplay of Breath of the Wild.
The core mechanic revolves around the Tri Rod, an item that allows Princess Zelda, the game’s protagonist, to create echoes of enemies and objects. This ‘echo’ becomes a permanent addition to her inventory, and Zelda can summon them at will. Each echo has a summon cost, represented by yellow ticks, which limits the number of echoes Zelda can have active at any given time. However, the system encourages experimentation and creative problem-solving.
For example, players might use a Keese echo to scout ahead, a Moblin echo to break through obstacles, or a trampoline echo to reach a higher platform. The possibilities are endless as players combine echoes to overcome challenges, navigate the overworld, and even defeat bosses.
Echoes of Wisdom also features traditional Zelda elements, such as top-down exploration, dungeons, and heart pieces. This familiar gameplay loop is seamlessly integrated with the new summoning system, resulting in a refreshingly unique experience.
During my 90-minute demo, I found myself eagerly experimenting with the summoning system, discovering creative solutions to puzzles and battling enemies in unexpected ways. The world feels alive with possibilities, encouraging players to think outside the box and discover new strategies.
While Zelda can’t directly attack enemies, she can rely on the summoned creatures to fight for her. This creates a compelling strategic element, where players must carefully choose which echoes to summon based on the situation at hand. Additionally, the game features clever boss encounters that challenge players to think tactically and exploit the unique abilities of their echoes.
Overall, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom looks to be a delightful and innovative addition to the series. It blends classic Zelda mechanics with a groundbreaking new summoning system, creating an experience that is both familiar and fresh. If the final game lives up to the promise of its early access, it could be one of the most unique and engaging Zelda titles to date.
