Terramor Outdoor Resort Earns SITES Gold Certification, Demonstrating KOA’s Commitment to Sustainability

Terramor Outdoor Resort Bar Harbor, a property owned and operated by Kampgrounds of America (KOA), has achieved a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainable practices by earning the prestigious SITES Gold certification. Managed by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the Sustainable SITES Initiative (SITES) rating system promotes the development of sustainable and resilient landscapes. This certification signifies that Terramor Outdoor Resort has successfully implemented best practices in sustainable landscape design, development, and management, making it the first outdoor or glamping resort in the world to achieve this distinction.

The resort’s SITES Gold certification is a testament to KOA’s dedication to environmental stewardship and eco-friendly hospitality. Terramor stands out as the first project in the United States to achieve this certification through the Existing Landscapes pilot program, demonstrating the resort’s commitment to restoring and enhancing its natural surroundings.

Opened in 2020, Terramor Outdoor Resort Bar Harbor offers a unique and immersive nature experience. Located near the entrance of Acadia National Park, it seamlessly blends the charm of a camping adventure with the comforts of a luxury escape. The site was previously a long-standing campground, where 40 campsites were removed, and 1,000 trees were planted to restore the area. This careful restoration effort exemplifies Terramor’s commitment to creating a positive environmental impact.

The resort’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond its environmental impact. Terramor also focuses on economic and social benefits. By employing green initiatives and supporting local businesses, the resort contributes to the well-being of the surrounding community.

“The name ‘Terramor’ combines the words ‘Terra’ (earth) and ‘amor’ (love), and since day one, our resort has worked to create a space that lives up to that ideal,” said Toby O’Rourke, President & CEO of Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA). “We’re extremely proud to be the first outdoor resort to have earned this SITES for Existing Landscapes certification, demonstrating that eco-friendliness, luxury, and the great outdoors can all be blended seamlessly.”

The resort’s SITES Gold certification is a significant achievement that reinforces KOA’s commitment to pioneering sustainable practices across its operations and campground design. By emphasizing green infrastructure and fostering a strong connection with nature, KOA is setting a new standard for eco-friendly travel in the outdoor hospitality industry.

Terramor’s SITES Gold certification embodies its “Rooted Here” philosophy, which reflects a deep connection to the local landscape and community on Mount Desert Island. The resort integrates locally sourced products and curated experiences to create a setting where guests can form meaningful bonds with nature and each other. This approach ensures a perfect harmony of nature and comfort, bringing to life Terramor’s vision of a sustainable, immersive, and connected resort experience.
