Pre-Rolls Continue to Dominate the US Cannabis Market

Pre-rolled marijuana products are proving to be a dominant force in the US cannabis market. A recent study conducted by Custom Cones USA reveals that pre-rolls generated over $4.1 billion in sales revenue with more than 394 million units sold during 2023 and the first half of 2024. This impressive performance is driven by a significant increase in market share, rising from 13.2% in January 2023 to a record-high 15.9% in June 2024. The study, based on data from 12 states including Arizona, California, Colorado, and Illinois, highlights the remarkable growth trajectory of pre-rolls.

The popularity of pre-rolls is particularly evident in their monthly sales, which have surged by 42% to $257 million in June 2024. This trend has been consistent over the years, with pre-roll sales revenue exceeding beverage sales revenue by nearly 12 times in June 2024. Custom Cones USA emphasizes the consistent growth of pre-rolls, noting that their market share has increased annually since 2020, when it stood at 9.8%. The company highlights the dramatic increase in annual pre-roll sales revenue from $469 million in 2019 to $2.7 billion in 2023.

Infused pre-rolls have emerged as the top-selling category within the pre-roll market. Custom Cones USA reports that the market share of connoisseur/infused pre-rolls has shown impressive growth since 2019, maintaining an average share of 34.4% across the tracked markets. This segment has experienced rapid acceleration, reaching 41.5% in 2023 and climbing further to 44.4% in the first half of 2024.

Despite their dominance, pre-rolls remain in third place after raw flower and vape pens. However, both of these categories have experienced smaller growth rates, gaining less than 3.5% each over the same period. Custom Cones USA predicts that as the cannabis market expands into new territories, pre-rolls are likely to continue their upward sales trajectory. The future looks promising for pre-rolls as they solidify their position as a leading player in the growing cannabis industry.
