Virat Kohli Tops List of Highest Tax-Paying Indian Cricketers in FY24

The financial success of top Indian cricketers has always been a subject of fascination for fans. With cricket being the nation’s most beloved sport since the 1983 World Cup victory, the earnings of these players have skyrocketed, especially after the arrival of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. Endorsement deals further amplify their brand value, leading to significant financial gains.

Naturally, these astronomical earnings also come with a hefty tax burden. According to a report published by Fortune India, batting icon Virat Kohli stands at the top of the list, not just for cricketers, but for all Indian sportspersons who paid the most tax in the financial year 2023-24. Kohli, currently enjoying a break from the game and vacationing with his family in London, has reportedly paid a staggering Rs 66 crore in taxes. Following closely behind are MS Dhoni (Rs 38 crore) and Sachin Tendulkar (Rs 28 crore), completing the top three spots.

The list of celebrity taxpayers released by Fortune India also includes other cricketing legends like Sourav Ganguly, who paid Rs 23 crore in taxes, and Hardik Pandya (Rs 13 crore). Interestingly, the overall list is topped by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who is also the co-owner of the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. Shah Rukh has reportedly paid a whopping Rs 92 crore in taxes for the financial year 2023-24.

This report highlights the significant contributions these high-earning athletes and entertainers make to the Indian government through their tax payments, while also emphasizing the financial rewards enjoyed by top performers in the country’s most popular sports and entertainment industries.
