Matilda Goad, a London-based interior designer known for her signature scalloped edges and woven ceramics, has embarked on a mission to make DIY more accessible and enjoyable. Inspired by the Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa’s quote, “The door handle is the handshake of a building,” Goad believes that finishing touches elevate a space, and she aims to bring a touch of playfulness and femininity to the often male-dominated world of hardware.
In 2022, she launched MG&Co Hardware, offering a collection of doorknobs, hooks, backplates, and knobs in a beautiful array of colors and shapes. This month, she expands her vision with The MG&Co Hardware Store in Notting Hill, a unique space that goes beyond simply selling hardware. It will host workshops and classes covering everything from knife sharpening and DIY basics to plastic recycling and decorating skills. Visitors can even bring in their own DIY projects for guidance or have their lamps rewired on-site. The store also features engravers who can personalize silver and brass-plated Matchbox Sleeves with messages and sketches.
Goad emphasizes the importance of having a well-equipped toolbox for successful DIY projects. She recommends investing in high-quality tools from brands like Trusco and Toyo, available at Labour & Wait, and keeping a stock of different lightbulbs. For larger, less frequently used tools, she suggests utilizing a Library of Things, which allows you to borrow items like industrial drills and pressure washers. While encouraging tackling basic DIY projects like painting walls, Goad also recognizes the value of expert assistance and recommends TaskHer, a platform that connects individuals with skilled tradeswomen.
The MG&Co Hardware Store is a testament to Goad’s passion for empowering everyone to embrace the world of DIY, providing the tools, knowledge, and support needed to bring creative visions to life. It’s a space where practicality meets playfulness, where learning is celebrated, and where the joy of creating something with your own hands is paramount.
