Matilda Goad’s MG&Co Hardware: Bringing Femininity to DIY

Matilda Goad, a London-based interior designer known for her signature scalloped edges and woven ceramics, is on a mission to democratize the world of DIY. Inspired by Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa’s quote, “The door handle is the handshake of a building,” Goad believes in the transformative power of finishing touches. She seeks to dismantle the perceived masculinity of hardware and tools, making them more accessible and inviting for everyone.

Goad launched MG&Co Hardware in 2022 with a collection of exquisite doorknobs, expanding her range to include hooks, backplates, and knobs in a palette of delicate colors like celadon, pistachio, and citron. This month, she’s opening The MG&Co Hardware Store in Notting Hill, a haven for DIY enthusiasts. The store will host a variety of workshops and classes, from knife sharpening with the renowned Japanese brand Niwaki to DIY basics, plastic recycling, and decorating skills with Edward Bulmer Natural Paint. Visitors can bring in their own projects for guidance, including lamps needing rewiring, and have engravings made on silver and brass-plated Matchbox Sleeves.

Goad emphasizes the importance of a well-equipped toolbox for successful DIY projects. She recommends investing in quality tools like those from Labour & Wait and Objects of Use. She also advises keeping a diverse selection of lightbulbs on hand and suggests borrowing specialized tools from a Library of Things for projects requiring larger equipment. While advocating for tackling basic DIY tasks, Goad recognizes the value of enlisting professional help when needed, highlighting TaskHer, a platform that connects individuals with skilled tradeswomen.

By creating a welcoming and informative space, Goad’s MG&Co Hardware store is empowering individuals to embrace their inner DIYer, making the process more approachable, enjoyable, and ultimately, empowering.
