CarbiCrete, a Montreal-based company specializing in decarbonized concrete, has announced a significant partnership with Canal Block, a masonry producer based in Port Colborne, Ontario. This collaboration will see Canal Block begin producing cement-free CarbiCrete products in early 2025, once their plant is equipped with CarbiCrete’s advanced curing system.
This partnership marks a major milestone for CarbiCrete, expanding its reach beyond Quebec, where its technology is already being deployed by Patio Drummond. The company’s patented process for making decarbonized concrete eliminates emissions associated with cement production and actively removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This is achieved by replacing cement with a by-product from steel manufacturing and incorporating CO2 into the concrete for permanent storage.
CarbiCrete’s commitment to sustainability resonates deeply with Canal Block, a family-owned business with a history of prioritizing eco-friendly practices. “We are incredibly excited to incorporate CarbiCrete’s technology into our product line,” said Durk Bylsma, Canal Block’s president. “We look forward to offering a carbon-negative masonry unit to Ontario’s construction market in 2025.”
This collaboration is not only about producing sustainable building materials. CarbiCrete is also actively selling the environmental benefits of its technology by offering carbon credits. These credits represent the emissions reductions achieved through their process, enabling companies to offset their own carbon footprint and contribute to climate action. The company recently partnered with 3Degrees, a leading climate solutions provider, to quantify, verify, and manage the sale of these carbon credits.
With this partnership, CarbiCrete continues to demonstrate its commitment to transforming the construction industry and contributing to a more sustainable future. The introduction of cement-free concrete to Ontario promises a significant reduction in the industry’s carbon footprint and positions CarbiCrete as a key player in the global fight against climate change.
