Folding phones have become increasingly popular in recent years, but some apps haven’t kept pace with their unique screen designs. Gboard, the ubiquitous Google keyboard, is one such app that has lagged behind. While it’s readily available on nearly every Google-powered device, its interface on foldables could definitely use some improvements.
However, a recent update to Gboard brings much-needed relief for foldable phone users. Android Authority’s Mishaal Rahman noticed a new UI within Gboard while using his Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. He found that the new UI wasn’t present on other devices until they were updated to version 14.6.02-beta.
This update cleverly repositions toolbars, such as the search bar and category options, to make them easier to use on large-screen devices, especially book-style folding phones. The redesigned layout makes one-handed typing more intuitive. Now, you can effortlessly navigate through categories, search for words, and more using your left hand, while your right hand remains free to select specific characters or icons.
The primary change is the removal of distracting toolbars that previously occupied the top of the screen. These bars have now been moved to a left-hand column. This column contains the search bar, recent emojis and searches, and other helpful tools. Now, instead of scrolling horizontally through different categories, you scroll vertically, offering a more streamlined experience.
If you’re currently a Gboard beta participant, make sure to update your app. And if you’re not part of the beta program, you can install version 14.6.02-beta to gain access to this new layout. While this update might not be a revolutionary change, it’s a small improvement with significant benefits in terms of usability and optimization.
