Denmark Dominates Switzerland, San Marino Secures Historic Win in Nations League

Denmark secured a dominant 2-0 victory over Switzerland in their UEFA Nations League A Group Four clash at the Parken Stadium on Thursday. The match saw a dramatic turn of events with Switzerland reduced to nine men due to red cards, ultimately handing Denmark the advantage.

Patrick Dorgu, making his debut for Denmark, scored a minute after coming off the bench, putting the Danes ahead. The Swiss defense was in trouble early in the second half when Nico Elvedi received a red card following a VAR review, initially thought to be a penalty for a foul on Kasper Dolberg. Jonas Wind had the ball in the net in the 72nd minute but the goal was disallowed for offside. Just nine minutes later, Dorgu entered the game for his first cap and promptly found the back of the net with a powerful shot, converting an assist from fellow substitute Andreas Skov Olsen.

Switzerland’s chances of mounting a comeback were further diminished when captain Granit Xhaka received his second yellow card in the 87th minute, leaving his team down to nine men. Danish captain Pierre Emil Hojbjerg sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal, also assisted by Skov Olsen, leaving Denmark at the top of the group.

Meanwhile, in another Nations League match, San Marino achieved a momentous milestone, securing their first ever competitive win. In a match against Liechtenstein, San Marino, ranked 210th in the FIFA rankings, defeated their opponents, ranked 199th, 1-0. Nicko Sensoli became a national hero after his 53rd minute goal, delivering a victory that had eluded the country for 20 years. Their only previous win came against Liechtenstein in a 2004 friendly match. This victory sparked wild celebrations at the San Marino stadium, ending a 140-game winless streak. San Marino now sits at the top of their group, which includes Gibraltar.
