Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder Case: Bribery Allegations, Viral Videos, and Political Tensions

The alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata continues to generate headlines and controversy. The case has taken a dramatic turn with the emergence of viral videos, conflicting statements, and raids by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). At the heart of the controversy are accusations of a police cover-up, political maneuvering, and financial irregularities at the institute.

The parents of the deceased doctor have accused the Kolkata Police of attempting to suppress the case by hurriedly cremating the body and offering them a bribe to remain silent. They allege that they were not allowed to see the body and were pressured to accept money after the incident. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has refuted the bribery accusations, releasing a video purportedly showing the doctor’s father denying any such offer. However, the family claims the video was forcibly recorded by the police.

The BJP has capitalized on the situation, accusing the TMC of using the tragedy for political gain and attempting to derail the investigation. The party has also criticized the state government’s response to the case, highlighting a letter from the former principal of the college seeking renovation of the area where the doctor’s body was found. This letter, dated after the alleged crime, raises questions about the veracity of previous statements regarding the renovation work.

Adding further complexity to the case, the ED has conducted raids on the residence of the former principal, Sandip Ghosh, and two other locations in connection with an alleged financial scam at the hospital. Ghosh, who served as principal from 2021 to 2023, was briefly transferred but later reinstated.

The state government, led by Mamata Banerjee, has introduced the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill in the assembly, citing the high number of rape cases and low conviction rates in India. However, the bill has been met with criticism from the state Governor, Ananda Bose, who has questioned the lack of a technical report accompanying the bill.

The case continues to unfold, with each new development adding further layers of complexity and raising new questions about the role of the police, the hospital administration, and the political parties involved. The public awaits answers and justice for the deceased doctor, while the ongoing investigations aim to unravel the truth behind this tragic event.
