Michael Palfrey, a coach for the Australian Olympic swimming team, has been fired by Swimming Australia for his comments during the Paris 2024 Olympics. Palfrey, who works with athletes from multiple countries, sparked controversy by expressing hope that South Korean swimmer Kim Woo-min would win the men’s 400-meter freestyle. This event also included Australian contenders Sam Short and Elijah Winnington.
Palfrey’s comments, delivered to media days before the Games, drew swift criticism from team officials and the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC). The AOC deemed his statement a “serious error of judgement,” despite allowing him to continue his coaching role at the Olympics.
However, Swimming Australia (SA) ultimately took action, dismissing Palfrey on Friday for breaching his contract. SA stated that Palfrey brought himself into disrepute, damaging his own reputation and that of the organization, ultimately harming their interests.
While Palfrey was unavailable for immediate comment, Winnington and Rohan Taylor, Australia’s head coach, confirmed that Palfrey had apologized for his remarks. Palfrey had been coaching several Australian Olympic swimmers, including Zac Incerti, Abbey Connor, and Alex Perkins, in addition to breaststroker Sam Williamson.
The 400-meter freestyle event concluded with a German victory, Lukas Maertens taking gold. Winnington secured silver, while Kim claimed bronze. Despite the controversial events, Australia’s focus remains on supporting their athletes and achieving success at the Games.
