A tragic incident occurred in Delhi’s bustling Connaught Place on Wednesday, resulting in the death of a 45-year-old homeless man. The victim, identified as Lekhraj, was struck by a speeding car and dragged for approximately 10 meters before being released from the vehicle’s wheels.
The driver of the car, 28-year-old Shivam Dubey, allegedly fled the scene after the accident. However, Delhi Police, using CCTV footage, tracked down Dubey the next day. He was arrested and charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence.
According to police investigations, Dubey, a native of Madhya Pradesh, had borrowed the car from a friend in Mahipalpur, south Delhi, to meet someone in Connaught Place. The incident occurred around 3:25 pm as Dubey was returning from his meeting. While crossing the road near Barakhamba Radial Road, he allegedly struck Lekhraj, who was crossing the road at the outer circle of Connaught Place.
After the collision, Lekhraj became trapped under the car’s wheels, but Dubey reportedly continued driving. The car dragged Lekhraj for about 10 meters before he was finally released. Despite this, Dubey allegedly kept driving and fled the scene, leaving Lekhraj injured on the road.
The injured man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival. After fleeing Connaught Place, Dubey returned the car to his friend. Police, using CCTV footage, identified the car involved in the incident and apprehended Dubey. The vehicle has been impounded, and further investigations are ongoing.
