Tamil Nadu Forms Committee to Regulate School Programs After Controversy

In response to a recent controversy involving a spiritual speaker’s address at Chennai schools, Tamil Nadu’s School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has announced the formation of a committee to regulate future programs in schools. This committee will have the authority to decide on the speakers and content of programs held in schools across the state.

The minister, speaking to reporters in Thanjavur on Saturday, emphasized the importance of maintaining harmony and preventing divisive ideologies within schools. He stated that Tamil Nadu is a state that does not tolerate caste and religious discrimination. The minister’s decision to establish this committee follows a public outcry sparked by a speech delivered by spiritual speaker Mahavishnu from Paramporul Foundation at two Chennai schools on August 28th.

Mahavishnu’s speech, which focused on rebirth and karma, was deemed controversial by many, leading to calls for action against him. On Saturday evening, the Chennai police detained Mahavishnu upon his arrival at the Chennai International Airport from Australia.

Minister Poyyamozhi addressed the situation, emphasizing the need for swift action when problems arise. He stated that he would refer the matter to the police, who would take the necessary actions. The minister also mentioned a complaint alleging the insult of members of the differently-abled association, stating that the law would determine whether Mahavishnu’s actions were inappropriate.

The formation of this committee is expected to bring greater control over programs held in Tamil Nadu schools, ensuring they align with the state’s values of harmony and inclusivity. This move highlights the importance of carefully considering the content and speakers involved in school programs, especially in a diverse society like Tamil Nadu.
