A tragic accident occurred in Nigeria on Sunday when a fuel tanker carrying cattle collided head-on with another truck in the Agaie area of Niger state. The impact triggered a devastating explosion that claimed the lives of at least 48 people. The fuel tanker, laden with both flammable cargo and livestock, tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 50 cattle, who were burned alive in the inferno.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the grim toll, with Director-General Abdullahi Baba-Arab stating that search and rescue operations were ongoing at the scene. Initially, 30 bodies were recovered, but further investigations uncovered an additional 18 victims who perished in the fiery collision. The deceased were given a mass burial.
Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger state addressed the community, urging residents to remain calm and reminding road users to prioritize safety by strictly adhering to traffic regulations. He emphasized the need to safeguard both lives and property.
The incident underscores the critical issue of road safety in Nigeria, where a lack of an efficient railway system forces heavy reliance on road transport for cargo movement. This, in turn, leads to frequent fatal accidents along major roads. In 2020 alone, Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps recorded a staggering 1,531 gasoline tanker crashes, resulting in 535 fatalities and 1,142 injuries.
