In a bid to curb the alarming levels of air pollution that plague Delhi during the winter months, the AAP government has announced a blanket ban on firecrackers. The ban, effective immediately and lasting until January 1, 2025, covers all aspects of the firecracker industry, including production, storage, sale, and use. This prohibition extends to online platforms, ensuring that firecrackers cannot be purchased or delivered within the city limits.
Delhi’s Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, highlighted the seriousness of the situation and the government’s commitment to tackling air pollution. He stated that the ban is an integral part of the comprehensive winter action plan, which comprises 21 targeted measures designed to improve air quality. The plan outlines a collaborative approach involving the Delhi Police, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and the Revenue Department to ensure strict implementation of the firecracker ban.
This decision underscores the urgency to address Delhi’s chronic air pollution problem, which poses significant health risks to residents.
