Netherlands defender Matthijs de Ligt will get another chance to prove himself on Tuesday when the Dutch face Germany in their Nations League clash. Despite a costly mistake in the opening match against Bosnia, coach Ronald Koeman has expressed his unwavering confidence in the new Manchester United center back.
De Ligt’s error, which allowed veteran striker Edin Dzeko to score, thrust him into the spotlight in his home country. However, Koeman has chosen to focus on De Ligt’s overall contribution and potential, stating that “We should not be dramatic about it and put too much emphasis on it.”
The game against Bosnia marked De Ligt’s first competitive international appearance in a year. While he was on the bench at last year’s European Championship, he didn’t get any playing time. Despite his limited recent international experience, De Ligt has already amassed an impressive 46 caps at the age of 25.
De Ligt’s move to Manchester United is seen as a positive step for his development. Koeman believes the move will provide De Ligt with more opportunities to showcase his skills, as the Premier League receives global attention compared to the Bundesliga.
“I also spoke to Koeman about my transfer to United. I’m very happy with it,” De Ligt revealed in a Dutch NOS television interview. “It’s also to stay in the picture a bit more, as crazy as that may sound. But you do notice that the Premier League is watched by everyone and the Bundesliga apparently less.”
The Netherlands will be hoping that De Ligt can regain his form and contribute positively in the upcoming Nations League matches. With a new club and a renewed sense of purpose, De Ligt is eager to prove himself on the international stage.
