Morocco has made a significant leap in the tourism sector, surpassing South Africa to become Africa’s second most popular tourist destination, trailing only Egypt. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Morocco, showcasing its growing appeal as a travel destination within the continent.
The rise of Morocco can be attributed to its strong social media presence, robust online visibility, and increasing attractiveness to tourists. This surge in popularity has pushed South Africa to the third position, underscoring Morocco’s growing prominence as a top destination.
Bloom Consulting, which compiled the rankings, emphasizes Morocco’s resilience as a crucial factor in its sustained tourism growth. Despite facing the devastating earthquake in September 2023, Morocco has continued to demonstrate its strength and commitment to tourism development.
The rankings are based on various factors such as tourism revenue, online searches, website traffic, and social media engagement. The report also highlights the positive performance of other African nations. Sao Tome and Principe climbed eight spots, while Côte d’Ivoire surged by 11 places, boosted by the upcoming 2024 African Cup of Nations. Out of the 35 African nations assessed, 20 saw improvements in their tourism rankings.
