Lucid Showcases Gravity SUV and Highlights Cost-Effective Technologies

Lucid Group, the renowned manufacturer of cutting-edge electric vehicles, took center stage at its Technology & Manufacturing Day, held at its Arizona factory. The event was a showcase of the upcoming Lucid Gravity SUV, the company’s enabling technologies, and an independent third-party analysis highlighting the cost-effectiveness of their innovations.

To add to the excitement, Lucid announced that by August 31st, 2024, they had already delivered more vehicles in 2024 than in the entirety of 2023.

“Today demonstrates how the Lucid Gravity is set to be the best SUV ever, showcasing its revolutionary package and attributes only made possible with the technologies Lucid has pioneered,” shared Peter Rawlinson, CEO, and CTO at Lucid. “Our drive unit is one of several important enabling technologies, delivering next-level performance, collectively enabling a lower cost for our powertrain system than our competitors. Simply put, our vehicles go farther with less, unlocking significant cost and mass savings as we scale.”

Introducing the Atlas Drive Unit: The Future of Lucid Powertrains

While Lucid’s current powertrain technology stands head and shoulders above the competition, the company unveiled its next-generation drive unit, aptly named Atlas, currently in development and undergoing rigorous testing. This new drive unit is set to enhance value for both Lucid and its customers, and is destined for the company’s upcoming midsize platform vehicles.

Lucid’s existing electric drive unit already boasts superior power density, higher peak power, and a lower cost per horsepower (hp) compared to its rivals. The drive unit is remarkably compact, allowing for more spacious interiors, and boasts impressive efficiency, enabling extended range using less energy and, consequently, fewer batteries.

The proprietary software stack unlocks the full potential of these advanced drive units, providing comprehensive powertrain control, including torque vectoring, traction control, and battery management. Coupled with seamless software connectivity and infrastructure, Lucid vehicles continue to evolve and add value for customers throughout their lifecycles.

This week’s Lucid UX 2.4 over-the-air (OTA) update brings drivers an enhanced version of the optional Dream Drive Pro Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), a new voice control system, and an updated navigation map design, among other updates.

Lucid Gravity to Embrace NACS Charging

Lucid also made a significant announcement about the Lucid Gravity, stating that it will be equipped with a NACS charging connector in 2025, granting access to over 15,000+ Superchargers. The Lucid Gravity is scheduled to start production later this year. The company has incorporated the technologies, innovations, and learnings from the Lucid Air into the design of the Lucid Gravity, aiming to create the world’s most advanced electric SUV. Powered by the company’s ultra-compact powertrain technology, the Lucid Gravity is expected to deliver exhilarating performance while offering a spacious and sophisticated interior, accommodating up to seven adults and their belongings.

A Glimpse into the Future: The Midsize Platform

The event also provided a sneak peek at one of Lucid’s upcoming midsize vehicles. This new crossover will leverage the efficiency and cost advantages of Lucid technology, delivering the same range as competitors while using a smaller battery. The midsize platform is scheduled to start production in late 2026 with a starting price under $50,000.
