JCP&L Relaunches EV Charging Incentives to Boost Electric Vehicle Adoption in New Jersey

Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., has brought back its popular EV Driven program, offering financial assistance for homeowners in New Jersey who want to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers. This initiative aims to make EV ownership more accessible by covering the cost of essential preparation work required before a charger can be installed.

The EV Driven program, a four-year initiative approved by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) in 2022, was initially met with overwhelming demand, leading to its complete allocation of funds within just 14 months. Recognizing the program’s success and the increasing popularity of EVs, the BPU recently authorized reallocating $4.1 million from other parts of the EV Driven program, enabling its revival.

JCP&L customers can receive up to $7,000 in incentives to prepare their properties for EV charger installation, which can cover costs such as:

*

Electrical Upgrades:

Up to $1,500 for necessary electrical upgrades to accommodate a Level Two EV charger.
*

Utility Upgrades:

Up to $5,500 for upgrades like new utility poles, transformers, and service wires to support the charger installation.

Beyond the preparation work incentives, the program also includes additional bill credit incentives to encourage EV owners to charge their vehicles during off-peak hours. This helps to optimize grid usage and reduce energy costs.

The relaunched program is a significant step toward New Jersey’s goal of increasing EV adoption. The state’s Energy Master Plan emphasizes the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and transportation is identified as a major contributor to these emissions. By providing financial support for EV charging infrastructure, JCP&L is directly contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation future.
