Austrian Railways Unveils Next-Generation Nightjet Trains for Enhanced European Travel

Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) is taking a bold step forward in international travel by introducing state-of-the-art Nightjet trains on the Vienna-Rome and Munich-Rome routes. These new-generation trains, developed by Siemens Mobility, represent a significant leap in comfort and safety, ushering in a new era for rail travel across Europe.

The new Nightjet trains, first unveiled in 2022, have been generating excitement and anticipation. Their sleek and modern design is a far cry from traditional train carriages, offering a more spacious and comfortable experience for passengers. The first of these next-generation trains began service in December 2023, connecting Austria and Germany. However, some services were disrupted during the summer of 2024 due to railway maintenance across Germany, France, and Italy.

The Nightjet trains are comprised of seven carriages, capable of accommodating 254 passengers. Passengers have a variety of travel options to choose from, with two seating carriages, one with the driver’s cabin, and three carriages offering four-person compartments and capsule mini-compartments. For those seeking a higher level of comfort, two carriages offer comfort and comfort-plus classes.

Travelers on the Vienna-Rome route can take advantage of discounted fares under the Sparschiene program. Seats are available starting at $37, compartments or mini-compartments for $58, and comfort compartments for $106. These affordable fares make the Nightjet trains an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers.

With its emphasis on passenger comfort, safety, and affordability, the new Nightjet trains are poised to revolutionize travel across Europe. ÖBB’s commitment to expanding its international routes with these innovative trains signals a shift towards a more sustainable and enjoyable way to explore the continent.
