A tense situation unfolded in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, as security forces engaged in a fierce gunfight with terrorists. The encounter, which is currently ongoing, involves four heavily armed terrorists from the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) group, according to reports.
The encounter began after a joint search operation was launched in Kathua based on specific intelligence. Contact with the terrorists was established at the Kathua-Basantgarh border, leading to the exchange of fire. Police have cordoned off the area, and several rounds have been fired from both sides. While reports indicate no immediate casualties, the situation remains volatile.
The incident follows an earlier ceasefire violation in the Akhnoor area of Jammu. Pakistani troops initiated unprovoked firing on Indian posts, injuring a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel. The BSF retaliated to the attack, although the extent of any casualties on the Pakistani side remains unknown.
“On 11 Sept 2024 at about 02:35 AM, an incident of unprovoked firing in Akhnoor area from across the border happened and which was befittingly responded by the BSF. One BSF personnel sustained injuries in Pak firing. Troops are on high alert,” stated a BSF statement.
These ceasefire violations are a rare occurrence, especially since India and Pakistan renewed their ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021. This latest incident comes just before the first phase of the three-phase assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled for September 18. The second phase will be held on September 25, followed by the third phase on October 1. The counting of votes and results will be declared on October 8.
