Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) has taken a significant step towards a more sustainable future by achieving Level 1 Airport Carbon Accreditation. This prestigious recognition was awarded at the Airports Council International – North America Annual Conference and Exhibition in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The Airport Carbon Accreditation program, a globally recognized and institutionally endorsed certification, evaluates airports based on their commitment to carbon management. To achieve Level 1, an airport must demonstrate its ability to identify and quantify its carbon emissions, ultimately compiling a comprehensive carbon footprint report.
RJ Steenstra, President and CEO of PortsToronto, the entity responsible for owning and operating Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, expressed his pride in this accomplishment. He stated, “Achieving Level 1 Airport Carbon Accreditation is a significant milestone and reflects our long-standing commitment to sustainability. This recognition highlights our efforts to operate a cleaner, greener, and quieter airport. By understanding our current carbon footprint, PortsToronto and its partners are equipped to continue advancing responsible aviation practices and work towards our shared sustainability vision.”
Neil Pakey, President and CEO of Nieuport Aviation, a key partner at the airport, echoed Steenstra’s sentiments. He emphasized the program’s value in driving tangible improvements, stating, “ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation program provides a solid foundation to drive measurable improvements. A clear understanding of our sustainability journey allows all partners at the airport to align on future goals and the necessary steps to achieve them.”
This achievement signifies Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport’s dedication to environmental responsibility and its commitment to operating in a more sustainable manner. As the airport continues to evolve, the knowledge gained from this certification will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping its future sustainability initiatives.
