James May, the renowned television presenter and former host of the popular motoring show Top Gear, recently took the Tesla Cybertruck for a spin in California. While acknowledging its unique and daring design, May confessed that the Cybertruck’s sheer size isn’t for him. He admitted, “I’ll be honest with you. I don’t want a Cybertruck, it’s too big,” adding that he isn’t a fan of pickup trucks in general. However, he couldn’t help but be drawn to the Cybertruck’s unconventional appeal.
May highlighted the Cybertruck’s bold design, noting its resemblance to other Tesla vehicles while simultaneously breaking away from conventional styling. He praised the truck’s boldness and humor, stating, “I think the Cybertruck is actually very ballsy and quite humorous but I am quite glad it exists.”
In a video posted on YouTube, May also made a direct appeal to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, suggesting a smaller version of the Cybertruck. “If I could make a little appeal to Elon Musk. Could you make something about the size of a Model Y or maybe even a little bit smaller still like a Tesla… but styled like this,” May proposed. He believes the same bold styling could translate beautifully to a smaller vehicle, perhaps the size of a Ford Focus or a Fiat Panda.
The Cybertruck, with its towering height of 70.5 inches and imposing length of 223.7 inches, is undeniably a large vehicle, even by American standards. Tesla began delivering the Cybertruck to US customers in late November, and while currently limited to US deliveries, the company plans to expand to Canada later this year.
May’s feedback highlights the ongoing debate about the Cybertruck’s practicality and appeal. While some appreciate its ruggedness and bold design, others, like May, might find its size a deterrent. It remains to be seen whether Tesla will consider offering a smaller, more compact version of the Cybertruck, but May’s suggestion provides a fresh perspective on the popular electric vehicle’s design.
