My photographic series, ‘The Box,’ began with a desire to explore the multifaceted nature of identity. I believe we all have the power to choose who we want to be in life, and that rarely are things black and white. Instead, they exist in shades of grey, like the spectrum between male and female. With these thoughts in mind, I incorporated raw wool into the creation of the outfits and backgrounds, symbolizing the raw potential within each individual.
To further emphasize this fluidity, I added blue and gold to Eve’s face. These colors represent a blend of masculine and feminine energies, reflecting the idea that we can embrace multiple aspects of ourselves. Inspired by the transporter from the Star Trek series, I sought to give the photographs a slightly futuristic feel, hinting at the possibilities of limitless transformation.
During the shoot, I would share Star Trek stories with my model, Eve, fostering a collaborative spirit. We worked together on makeup and styling, allowing her to express her individuality. My approach to photography isn’t about pleasing anyone or selling a particular message. It’s about giving my models, Eve and Sophie, the space to be themselves. This freedom of expression permeates all my shoots.
After meticulously crafting the backgrounds and outfits in isolation, working with models opens up a new dimension of creativity. It’s a joyful experience, and I hope that sense of freedom and joy translates into my photographs.
