Landslides and Rising River Levels Disrupt Travel in Uttarakhand Amidst Heavy Rains

Uttarakhand is facing the brunt of heavy rainfall, with several locations along the Badrinath National Highway experiencing disruptions due to landslides. The road has been blocked at various points, including Barrage Kunj, Sonala, Nandprayag, and Lambagad, as reported by ANI. The Chamoli Police have attributed the roadblocks to the intense rainfall, which has triggered landslides in multiple locations. As a safety measure, police are halting travelers at safe spots.

Meanwhile, the River Ganga in Rishikesh has breached the warning level, reaching 293.15 cms, just slightly above the warning level of 293 cms. The danger level is set at 294 cms. The rising water levels have prompted authorities to issue an alert, and the district administration has instructed residents to take necessary precautions.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, recognizing the severity of the situation, has directed the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams and District Magistrates to remain on high alert. He has also urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel during this period of heavy rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several southern districts of Uttarakhand and an orange alert for other regions. The IMD forecasts isolated heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand on September 14.

In Nainital district, the continuous rainfall has forced the closure of several roads, including the Haldwani-Sitarganj road, due to water overflow in the Shernala area. Travelers are being advised to seek alternate routes and avoid travel until the weather conditions improve.

The heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand has posed a significant challenge to travel and daily life. The IMD has issued warnings of potential hazards, including:

*

Landslides:

Minor to medium-sized landslides, rock falls, and mudslides are likely to occur in hilly areas, potentially causing road and bridge blockages or damage.
*

Riverine Hazards:

Sudden increases in water flow in rivers and streams may lead to bank erosion, overflow, and flash floods in certain areas. Low-lying areas, particularly in Udham Singh Nagar district, are at risk of flooding and inundation.

The authorities in Uttarakhand are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to ensure the safety of residents. Travelers are urged to stay informed about weather conditions and follow the guidance provided by local authorities.
