The deadlock was finally broken in the 58th minute when Vinicius Jr stepped up to convert a penalty after Real Sociedad midfielder Sergio Gomez was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. The Brazilian winger sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, giving Real Madrid the lead.
Mbappe then sealed the victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the 75th minute, coolly slotting home his penalty after Vinicius Jr was fouled inside the area.
Despite Real Sociedad’s valiant efforts, including three shots that struck the woodwork, they were unable to find a way back into the match.
With the win, Real Madrid moved into second place in the La Liga table with 11 points, just one point behind leaders Barcelona, who face Girona later in the day.
