Marseille has made a significant addition to their squad with the signing of French international midfielder Adrien Rabiot. The move was confirmed on Tuesday, following an “agreement in principle” reached between the club and the player. Rabiot had been a free agent since departing Juventus in July after a five-year stint that yielded a Serie A title and two Italian Cups.
Marseille expressed their delight at securing the 29-year-old midfielder, stating in a statement: “Marseille are delighted to announce the signing of Adrien Rabiot. The 29-year-old midfielder has signed a new contract… after passing his medical.” While the length of the contract has not been disclosed, sources suggest it will be for two years.
Rabiot’s career boasts a wealth of experience, having represented France on 48 occasions and playing a key role in their run to the World Cup final in Qatar last year. He also featured in Euro 2024, where France reached the semifinals before losing to eventual champions Spain.
Prior to joining Juventus, Rabiot spent a significant portion of his career with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where he won six league titles. However, his departure from PSG was marked by controversy. Despite the challenges, Rabiot’s signing has sparked excitement among Marseille fans, who warmly welcomed him at Marignane airport on Monday evening. He was met with chants and flares, creating a vibrant atmosphere.
“I wasn’t expecting that. Seeing all these people here is heart-warming. I know my family are happy too. It makes you want to play and win,” Rabiot remarked, expressing his gratitude to the supporters. He added, “It’s really incredible. I didn’t expect such a good mood, such warmth.”
Marseille, under new coach Roberto De Zerbi, have made a strong start to the Ligue 1 season, most recently securing a victory over Nice in front of a packed Velodrome stadium. Another notable signing for the club was 22-year-old Mason Greenwood, whose arrival was met with controversy due to past sex assault charges that were ultimately dropped. Greenwood has impressed on the pitch, scoring five goals in four league appearances.
Rabiot’s return to French football could see him make his Marseille debut against Lyon this Sunday, even though he hasn’t played since Euro 2024. His arrival marks a significant step forward for Marseille, as they look to make a strong title challenge in Ligue 1.
