The father of the deceased trainee doctor from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College has leveled a poignant accusation against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He claims that his daughter would still be alive if the Chief Minister had taken action against former principal Sandeep Ghosh in 2021.
In a statement to ANI, the victim’s father expressed his belief that the ongoing CBI investigation is thorough and that those responsible for the murder and any potential evidence tampering will be held accountable. He also expressed solidarity with the protesting junior doctors, who he sees as his own children, sharing their pain and frustration.
“The day the accused are held accountable will mark our victory… In the year 2021 also, many allegations were levelled against former principal Sandeep Ghosh; if the Chief Minister had taken action against Sandeep Ghosh then, today my daughter would have been alive,” he said.
This statement comes amidst a wave of protests by junior doctors following the horrific rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor at the college on August 9th. The protesters have outlined five key demands, including justice for the victim, expedited investigation, and the removal of several officials from the West Bengal Department of Health and Family Welfare, including the Director of Medical Education (DME), the Director of Health Services (DHS), and the Health Secretary.
The protests have also led to the removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and several other officials. This decision was made by Chief Minister Banerjee in response to the doctors’ demands, a sign that the government is finally acknowledging the seriousness of the situation.
The father’s accusation highlights a crucial issue of accountability and the potential for preventative action.
