Marcelo Claure, the co-owner of Spanish La Liga club Girona, has made a significant investment in American soccer, acquiring a 10% stake in Major League Soccer’s (MLS) New York City FC. This move further strengthens the connection between the two clubs, both of which are part of the global football powerhouse, City Football Group (CFG). CFG’s portfolio boasts several clubs worldwide, most notably the reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City.
Khaldoon Al Mubarak, chairman of CFG and New York City FC, expressed his enthusiasm about Claure’s involvement, stating, “We have had the pleasure of working with Marcelo closely across various City Football Group projects. Marcelo has an incredible passion for soccer, for MLS, and for the growth of the sport in the United States.”
Claure’s passion for soccer is well-documented. He was previously a partner with David Beckham in the launch of Inter Miami before divesting his ownership in 2021. He also holds ownership of Club Bolivar, a 30-time Bolivian champion club. This new role marks his formal entry into the MLS scene as he’s been appointed co-vice chairman at New York City FC, a position that will see him play a significant role in the club’s future direction and development.
