Louis Vuitton Unveils ‘Le Damier de Louis Vuitton,’ a Dazzling New Fine Jewelry Collection

What happens when Louis Vuitton’s iconic Damier pattern is reinterpreted as fine jewelry? The answer lies in the maison’s newest collection, ‘Le Damier de Louis Vuitton.’ This contemporary line, encompassing 12 pieces including rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, reimagines the brand’s signature motif with diamonds. Francesca Amfitheatrof, the Artistic Director of Watches & Fine Jewelry, passionately describes the collection as “transcending generations and genders, embodying the essence of modern jewelry.”

The inspiration? A legendary tennis court moment: The 1978 US Open, where Chris Evert’s diamond bracelet slipped off her wrist, causing a match stoppage until it was found. This incident birthed the ‘tennis bracelet,’ and Amfitheatrof’s vision was to “reconstruct the movement of the classic tennis bracelet, creating a modern piece that seamlessly integrates with the skin.” As a pioneer in challenging the conventions of fine jewelry, Amfitheatrof sought to expand the possibilities of this timeless piece.

The tennis bracelet, available in yellow and white gold, shimmers with diamonds set in two rows. While the intricate craftsmanship is remarkable, the bracelet’s flexible fit, feeling like a second skin, is truly unparalleled. Amfitheatrof explains, “We’ve transformed this delicate, classic piece into a modern, everyday, genderless, and edgy, ageless piece of jewelry that you can wear close to your skin.”

The concept of daily wear is evident throughout the collection, reflected in the design continuity and styling. The rings, with their refined designs featuring diamonds set in two or four rows, are destined to become coveted new eternity bands. Pendant necklaces, featuring round pendants set in delicate yellow gold chains, complement the collection. Even the seemingly simple hoop earrings embrace the Damier motif, with diamonds set in a subtle nod to the iconic pattern. However, Amfitheatrof emphasizes that diamonds aren’t the only stars of the show.

“The pattern is the magic of this collection,” she shares. “If Louis Vuitton were alive today, he would be proud to see his creation from 1888 transformed into gold and diamond jewelry. The uninterrupted continuity of the Damier pattern can now be worn close to the skin. A modern and classic finish you can keep close forever.”

This new collection, a testament to exceptional craftsmanship, is destined to become a heritage piece, cherished across generations. Yet, Amfitheatrof emphasizes that the pieces are both sensual and casual, making them accessible to all. When asked about her recommended styling, she suggests, “The sinuous lines are sensual, and the feel against the skin is exquisite. Layering, mixing different gold colors, or even playing with different sizes, all work beautifully.”

‘Le Damier de Louis Vuitton’ represents a modern and inclusive approach to fine jewelry, breathing new life into a traditionally conservative field. Amfitheatrof describes it as a “new age creation.” “It’s a modern collection, yes, but one meant to be cherished for a lifetime.”

‘Le Damier de Louis Vuitton’ is set to launch on October 18, 2024.
