The Africa Tourism Leadership Forum (ATLF) has once again ignited a spark of progress for the African tourism industry. The 7th edition of this influential event, held in Gaborone, Botswana, from September 3rd to 6th, 2024, concluded with a resounding success, leaving behind a trail of invigorated plans and exciting prospects for growth within the continent.
The ATLF attracted a diverse and prominent gathering of pan-African leaders, including Heads of State, Ministers, policymakers, tourism officials, and leading figures from across the tourism, travel, aviation, hospitality, and startup sectors. The forum served as a platform to foster dialogue, collaboration, and strategic partnerships to propel intra-African travel and investment opportunities.
Prior to the main forum, a series of dynamic sessions engaged participants in critical discussions and networking opportunities. Business-to-business meetings, exhibitions, destination showcases, and an entrepreneurial MICE masterclass provided valuable insights and facilitated collaboration. Over 800 in-person and more than 2,000 virtual delegates from over 95 countries participated in the four-day event.
One of the highlights was the Africa Tourism Leadership Awards, recognizing individuals and organizations making significant contributions to the industry’s sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. Mr. Roger Foster, CEO and MD of Airlink, South Africa, was awarded the prestigious Destination Africa – Lifetime Award. Ms. Keitumetse Setlang, CEO of Botswana Tourism Organisation, and Ms. Elcia Grandcourt, Director of the Africa Department at UN Tourism, were also lauded for their outstanding dedication to the continent’s tourism growth.
The Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Challenge, a key initiative of the ATLF, played a pivotal role in empowering young entrepreneurs. The challenge provided a platform for aspiring innovators to showcase their cutting-edge tourism and travel tech projects, bringing them closer to reality. Joseph Owiredu from Ghana emerged as the top winner, while Rosalia Haufiku Laudika from Namibia and Ajena Jafar secured the first and second runner-up positions, respectively.
The 7th ATLF in Botswana proved to be a catalyst for fostering sustainable and inclusive growth within the African tourism sector. By bringing together key stakeholders, promoting innovation, and recognizing excellence, the event solidified its position as a cornerstone for shaping the future of African tourism.
