Get ready for a roaring return! The Hungarian MotoGP Grand Prix is back on the world championship calendar after a 33-year hiatus. Dorna, the promoter behind the championship, announced the exciting news on Thursday.
The new Balaton Park circuit, nestled 85 kilometers southwest of Budapest, will host its inaugural event from August 22 to 24, 2025. This marks a significant moment for Hungarian motorsport, bringing the thrill of MotoGP back to the country after a long absence.
Hungary’s previous foray into the World Motorcycle Speed Championship saw events in 1990 and 1992, held at the Hungaroring in Budapest, a track also used by Formula One. However, the return to the Balatonring circuit, located 180km from Budapest, was met with delays and ultimately led to the cancellation of the events in 2009 and 2010.
Balaton Park, designated as a reserve circuit by Dorna this season, has stepped in to fill the void. It becomes a key contender in the face of cancellations in Argentina, India, and Kazakhstan.
Looking ahead, the legendary Brno circuit in the Czech Republic will also make its comeback to the championship calendar in 2024. This iconic track, hosting over 50 editions of the Czechoslovak and Czech Grand Prix between 1965 and 2020, promises to add another layer of excitement to the racing calendar. With the return of both Hungary and Brno, the MotoGP world championship is set for an exciting new era, packed with thrilling races and iconic tracks.
