India’s promising badminton player, Malvika Bansod, faced a tough defeat in the quarterfinal of the China Open on Friday. She went up against Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, ranked eighth in the world, and ultimately fell short in a straight-game victory for the Japanese shuttler. The match, which concluded in 35 minutes, saw Yamaguchi dominate the contest.
Bansod, currently ranked 43rd in the world, had showcased impressive form leading up to the quarterfinal. She became the third Indian woman after PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal to reach a Super 1000 quarterfinal when she defeated Kristy Gilmour in a hard-fought three-set match on Thursday. Earlier in the tournament, the 22-year-old had also overcome the challenge of Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, the Paris Olympics bronze medallist from Indonesia.
