Prepare to embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of India’s tribal regions! Exciting initiatives are underway to open up a world of unique cultural experiences through the welcoming embrace of homestays. This initiative promises to bridge the gap between travelers and tribal cultures, creating a harmonious exchange of traditions and perspectives.
The Union Tourism Ministry is leading the charge, with plans to promote a staggering 1,000 homestays across villages in tribal areas known for their tourism potential. States like Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu are at the forefront of this movement, each eager to showcase the rich heritage and vibrant spirit of their tribal communities. The project aims to not only preserve the rich traditions of these communities but also to empower them economically, fostering sustainable development within these regions.
Under the Swadesh Darshan program, the Ministry will provide funding for the construction of 5 to 10 homestays in each selected tribal village. This initiative is a vital component of the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan, recently approved by the Union Cabinet. This ambitious program, with a total outlay of ₹79,156 crore, aims to uplift the socio-economic conditions of tribal communities across the country.
The program encompasses 25 different interventions to be implemented by 17 ministries over the next five years. This collaborative approach ensures effective utilization of funds allocated under the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Tribes (DAPST), aiming for saturation coverage in tribal-majority villages and aspirational districts across India.
The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) is already making significant strides. Many tribal families in the state have embraced the homestay project, welcoming visitors into their homes. Over 64 new homestays have been established in 28 villages, creating a sustainable and enriching environment for both visitors and tribal hosts. This initiative exemplifies the power of tourism to connect cultures, foster understanding, and empower local communities.
