My Cold Cure: Manuka Honey, Vitamin C, and More from Holland & Barrett

The unpredictable weather changes between seasons always seem to catch me off guard. This year, the cold snap last week left me with a nasty cold, complete with a blocked nose and a sore throat. Feeling miserable, I headed to my trusty health and wellness retailer, Holland & Barrett, determined to find a cure.

My first stop was for cold and flu tablets, hoping to nip the virus in the bud. Unfortunately, the common cold symptom of a runny nose quickly turned into a stubborn blocked nose, forcing me to breathe through my mouth, which led to a painful sore throat.

Manuka Honey to the Rescue

One of the first things I asked for was Manuka Honey. Its potent antibacterial and antioxidant properties set it apart from traditional honey. I opted for the strongest strength ManukaPharm MGO740, which was on sale for a fantastic price. A spoonful of Manuka Honey mixed with room temperature water not only soothed the swelling in my throat but also gave my immune system a much-needed boost.

ManukaPharm’s products have received rave reviews, with shoppers praising their effectiveness. One customer shared their experience: “I take a daily teaspoon full after following some research from Germany with hospital trials that are very good.” Another shopper commented, “Absolutely great manuka, been using this for my contact dermatitis/ eczema and this manuka took it away a couple years ago, all other chemicals from GP couldn’t help for year.”

Comvita also offers great promotions on their Manuka Honey, with discounts ranging from 20 to 40% off depending on the strength.

Vitamin C for a Speedier Recovery

While Vitamin C doesn’t cure a cold once you’re sick, its benefits help to reduce the duration and severity of symptoms. The Holland & Barrett High Strength Effervescent Vit C 1000mg Orange Flavour 20 Tablets are a convenient option, perfect for taking to the office or on the go. These orange-flavored tablets contribute to the normal function of the immune system and help support the normal function of vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, teeth, and skin. I took a tablet first thing in the morning, and I noticed a significant speedup in my recovery.

Sinus Relief with Nasal Spray

On my second day with the flu, the shop assistant, Aya, recommended a very helpful item to clear my sinus congestion: the A.Vogel Sinuforce Nasal Spray+Menthol. This spray is a quick and effective way to clear your airways, so you don’t have to blow your nose every minute. To use it, simply shake the bottle, remove the cap, hold it upright, and spray. It’s best to have tissues handy as it can get a little messy.

Unfortunately, this miracle product is currently unavailable online at H&B, but you can find it on Amazon. Alternatively, you can try Weleda’s Rhinodoron Nasal Spray, which is suitable for babies and vegans.

Vitamin B for Overall Wellbeing

Vitamin B is essential for brain function and energy production, both of which can be disrupted by a virus. The shop assistant manager, Peter, suggested I take Solgar Vitamin B-Complex “100” Extra High Potency Capsules. These capsules contain eight types of vitamin B and are considered a powerful “all rounder” for those looking to improve their wellbeing. MyVitamins B tablets also include all eight kinds of vitamin B in a single tablet form.

Soothing Lozenges for Sore Throats

With my throat feeling raw and scratchy, Peter recommended Ricola Soothe & Clear Honey, Lemon & Echinacea 20 Lozenges. These lozenges are sweet and soothing, providing instant relief. Peter also shared a helpful tip: “Take a few of them and drop them in a cup of hot water, it can also help to unblock your nose.” And it worked! The citrus scent of lemon and the hot steam opened up my blocked nose, allowing me to breathe again. Whenever I felt a tickle in my throat, I popped one of these candies for relief.

Fisherman’s Friend Original is also a good option if you prefer a strong menthol taste. You can find it at Boots and Superdrug.

Thanks to these wonderful products from Holland & Barrett, I was able to fight off my cold and get back to feeling my best in just a couple of days. The next time I feel under the weather, I know exactly where to go for a little bit of relief and a boost to my immune system.
