Nigeria’s travel industry is booming, with a surge in demand for international travel. However, this growth has unfortunately come with a darker side: an increase in visa-related scams. Alok Singhal, the head of Sub-Saharan Africa at VFS Global, a company that facilitates visa applications for various governments, has warned travelers about these scams during a media event in Lagos.
Singhal explained that the high demand for travel has created opportunities for unscrupulous individuals to exploit applicants. These scammers offer fraudulent early appointment slots in exchange for payments. He emphasized that these slots should only be obtained through the official VFS Global website, which allocates appointments based on real-time demand and consulate capacity. Singhal advised travelers to arrive at the visa application center at least 15 minutes before their scheduled appointment to avoid potential delays. He strongly discouraged engaging with any service that demands payment for appointment slots, as these are likely scams.
Beyond addressing the issue of scams, VFS Global also highlighted its commitment to fostering Africa’s travel and tourism sector. A report by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), in collaboration with VFS Global, indicates that the travel and tourism sector in Africa has the potential to add $168 billion to the continent’s GDP and create over 18 million new jobs. However, realizing this potential requires significant policy reforms, including improvements in air infrastructure, visa facilitation, and effective tourism marketing strategies.
In response to the escalating cases of fraud, VFS Global has implemented stricter measures to protect applicants. These include enhanced security protocols at application centers and clear communication that appointment bookings are free of charge. Singhal reiterated that VFS Global does not have the authority to influence visa approvals and that their role is strictly administrative and facilitative.
Mrs. Taiwo Dayo-Abatan, Regional Human Resources for Sub-Saharan Africa at VFS Global, also emphasized the company’s long-standing commitment to efficient visa administration. VFS Global, operating for 23 years, has partnered with 68 governments worldwide to streamline visa processes for millions of travelers. She also clarified the company’s refund policy, ensuring that applicants can recover fees for any service or value-added options that are not delivered as promised.

As the country continues to experience a travel boom, the role of companies like VFS Global becomes crucial in ensuring a secure and efficient visa application process.
