Mateo Julián Estrella Durán, a seasoned professional with extensive experience in tourism management, international relations, and sustainable development, has been appointed as Ecuador’s new Minister of Tourism. President Daniel Noboa chose Estrella Durán for his deep understanding of the tourism sector and his commitment to advancing Ecuador’s position as a premier global destination.
Prior to his appointment, Estrella Durán served as a strategic advisor at the Ministry of Tourism, playing a key role in developing initiatives that significantly enhanced Ecuador’s international presence. He has also led the Ecuadorian Association of Eco-Tourism and Adventure Travel, championing sustainable practices and fostering community partnerships to promote inclusive economic growth.
“I am honored to be appointed to this important role and continue highlighting Ecuador’s diverse tourism offerings to the world,” stated Estrella Durán. “Ecuador offers a unique array of experiences across its ‘Four Worlds’ ranging from the lush biodiversity of the Amazon and the breathtaking landscapes of the Andes to the vibrant coastal culture, and the unique wildlife of the Galápagos.” He believes that by working collaboratively with the Ecuadorian tourism industry and global travel partners, they can showcase the best of Ecuador, fostering sustainable growth, enriching visitor experiences, and ensuring that the tourism sector continues to thrive.
In his new role, Estrella Durán has outlined his vision for the future of Ecuadorian tourism. He plans to strengthen public-private partnerships, increase Ecuador’s visibility in emerging tourism markets, and introduce digital innovations to enhance the visitor experience. His extensive background in crafting tourism strategies and his deep knowledge of Ecuador’s varied regions will be instrumental in promoting the country as a destination that caters to diverse interests, from eco-tourism to cultural discovery.
Beyond his role at Ecuador’s Ministry of Tourism, Estrella Durán served as the general manager and president of Ecuaresorts S.A., where he managed the IBIS hotel franchise in Ecuador, further solidifying his expertise in the hospitality and tourism sectors. He has also dedicated over two decades of his career as a professor at the Faculty of Hospitality Sciences at the University of Cuenca. His impressive academic background is further complemented by his master’s degrees in Sustainable Strategic Management of Tourism Destinations from the University of Jaén in Spain and Tourism Destination Management from the University of Catalonia.
With his extensive experience, deep knowledge of Ecuador’s tourism potential, and a clear vision for the future, Estrella Durán is poised to lead Ecuador’s tourism sector into a new era of growth and prosperity.
