Ecuador Appoints New Tourism Minister to Boost Global Visibility and Drive Sustainable Growth

Mateo Julián Estrella Durán, a seasoned professional with extensive experience in tourism management, international relations, and sustainable development, has been appointed as Ecuador’s new Minister of Tourism. President Daniel Noboa chose Estrella Durán for his deep understanding of the tourism sector and his commitment to advancing Ecuador’s position as a premier global destination.

Prior to his appointment, Estrella Durán served as a strategic advisor at the Ministry of Tourism, playing a key role in developing initiatives that significantly enhanced Ecuador’s international presence. He has also led the Ecuadorian Association of Eco-Tourism and Adventure Travel, championing sustainable practices and fostering community partnerships to promote inclusive economic growth.

Beyond his role at Ecuador’s Ministry of Tourism, Estrella Durán served as the general manager and president of Ecuaresorts S.A., where he managed the IBIS hotel franchise in Ecuador, further solidifying his expertise in the hospitality and tourism sectors. He has also dedicated over two decades of his career as a professor at the Faculty of Hospitality Sciences at the University of Cuenca. His impressive academic background is further complemented by his master’s degrees in Sustainable Strategic Management of Tourism Destinations from the University of Jaén in Spain and Tourism Destination Management from the University of Catalonia.
