Punjab FC Clinches Second Consecutive ISL Win, Defeating Odisha FC 2-1

Punjab FC roared to their second consecutive win in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25, conquering Odisha FC with a 2-1 victory at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Friday. The ‘Shers’ (Lions) are now on an impressive eight-game unbeaten streak when they’ve taken the initial lead, winning six and drawing two.

A 27th-minute strike by the young and energetic Nihal Sudeesh (23) and a late goal by Leon Augustine sealed the deal for the home side, who fielded the same starting 11 from their previous match. Odisha, on the other hand, faced consecutive losses in their opening two games, leaving head coach Sergio Lobera with some serious tactical pondering.

Punjab FC dominated the game from the first whistle, creating numerous chances through their formidable offensive quartet: Nihal, Filip Mrzljak, Mushaga Bakenga, and Ezequiel Vidal. They consistently breached Odisha FC’s defense, putting their goalkeeper Amrinder Singh under constant pressure.

The breakthrough arrived in the 28th minute. Vidal, a whirlwind on the left flank, chipped a pass towards Mrzljak inside the box. Mrzljak, with a deft back-heel, set up Nihal perfectly. The 23-year-old Indian winger, with a swift move, outsmarted Odisha FC’s full-back Amey Ranawade and sent the ball sailing into the back of the net on the far right corner. Nihal’s celebration was a touching tribute, dedicating his goal to the quick recovery of PFC forward Luka Majcen, sidelined for at least six weeks due to an injury.

The decisive blow came from Augustine in the 89th minute. Ricky Shabong’s penetrating through ball found Augustine in the final third. The former Bengaluru FC player, who joined Punjab this summer, made no mistake, burying the ball into the bottom left corner and celebrating his goal with a joyous run into the stands.

Another summer transfer, this time for Odisha FC, Hugo Boumous, found the net minutes later with a volley in stoppage time. However, this late surge proved too little, too late for the ‘Juggernauts.’

Punjab FC will host Hyderabad FC next on September 25th, while Odisha FC travels to Jamshedpur for their next contest three days later.
