Andhra Pradesh, known for its rich cultural heritage, is taking significant strides in bolstering its tourism sector. The state’s Tourism Minister, Kandula Durgesh, recently announced plans to establish two major Buddhist Tourism Circuits. This initiative, revealed at the Andhra Pradesh-Vietnam Tourism Conclave 2024 held in Vijayawada, aims to foster stronger cultural ties with Vietnam while promoting the state’s Buddhist heritage sites.
Over 200 representatives from both India and Vietnam gathered at the conclave, emphasizing the growing importance of tourism and cultural exchange between the two nations. Minister Durgesh highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s deep connection to Buddhism, emphasizing the presence of numerous historical sites and pilgrimage destinations within the state. These include the significant Buddhist landmarks of Dhanyakatak (Amaravati), the Mahastupas in Bhattiprolu, and the rock caves in Guntupalli. The state’s rich history with Mahayana Buddhism makes it an ideal location for the proposed circuits, attracting both domestic and international tourists interested in Buddhist culture and history.
The Minister also pointed to the success of the Lumbini Festival, a grand celebration of Buddhist heritage held in Andhra Pradesh. This festival has effectively drawn large numbers of tourists, particularly those seeking spiritual and cultural experiences. The festival serves as a crucial platform to showcase the state’s Buddhist monuments and heritage sites, solidifying Andhra Pradesh’s position as a prominent destination for Buddhist tourism in India.
Beyond the cultural aspect, Minister Durgesh stressed the importance of collaboration between Andhra Pradesh and Vietnam in developing hospitality, infrastructure, and eco-tourism sectors. He proposed joint ventures to enhance both states’ tourism offerings while promoting sustainable development. He pointed out that in 2022, 37,232 tourists from Vietnam visited India, signifying a promising future for tourism growth between the two nations.
H.E. Enguyen Thanaih, representing Vietnam, expressed optimism about the strengthening ties between India and Vietnam, commending Andhra Pradesh’s tourism initiatives. He acknowledged the visionary leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and underscored the importance of continued collaboration. A video presentation highlighting Vietnam’s tourism development was also shared at the conclave, further emphasizing the mutual benefits of cultural exchange.
