Balenciaga Exhibition Showcases the ‘Subtleties of Dialogue’ at Kering’s Paris Headquarters

In celebration of European Heritage Days, this weekend (September 21st and 22nd), Kering, located in the historic Laennec building in Paris, will be hosting a captivating exhibition titled ‘Les Subtilités d’un Dialogue’ (The Subtleties of Dialogue). This original showcase delves into the creative world of Balenciaga, presenting the exquisite creations of both Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895-1972), the founder of the Spanish fashion house, and Demna, the current creative director.

The exhibition cleverly uses scenography to isolate and highlight the intricate details of each piece, inviting a more intimate analysis of their unique aesthetics, techniques, and the iconic codes of the fashion house. Divided into six thematic sections—the Collar, the Sleeve, the Hourglass Waistline, the Color Black, and Dialogues Between Cristóbal Balenciaga and Demna—the focus is on the micro to better understand the macro.

Individual components are meticulously examined for their innovative construction, materiality, and social significance. The exhibition is organized into personalized partitions, offering an in-depth study of the intricate details for which Balenciaga is renowned. The focus is on the minutiae, with frames showcasing patterns, pleats, closures, and constructions that underscore the impressive complexity and originality of the brand’s legacy.

For example, a selection of monochromatic black pieces crafted from Spanish lace, the first historical use of gazar, satin silk, sustainably produced neoprene, and dense velvet, is presented as a masterclass in materiality. The showcased garments are drawn from Balenciaga’s extensive archives, spanning the early works of Cristóbal Balenciaga and influential pieces from the early 20th century to the innovative contemporary ready-to-wear and haute couture collections designed by Demna.

Beyond the fashion exhibition, the chapel also features a unique selection of works by six contemporary artists, titled ‘In Praise of Space.’ This complementary exhibit adds another dimension to the celebration of heritage and artistic expression.
