“We’ve heard Israeli officials threatening to close down the bureau. We’ve heard the government discussing this, asking the military ruler in the occupied West Bank to close down and shut down the channel. But we [had] not been expecting it to happen today,” Ramallah, Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim said in a phone call to another bureau of the news outlet.
The raid comes amidst a backdrop of increasing tensions and violence. The Israeli government has been heavily criticized for its actions in the ongoing conflict, with many accusing it of targeting journalists and restricting press freedom. The Gaza Media Office has reported that 173 journalists have been killed by Israeli forces since the conflict began.
The Government Media Office in Gaza condemned the Israeli raid, calling it a “deadening scandal.” “We call on all media organizations and groups that deal with human rights in the world to condemn this heinous crime … that is a blatant violation of press and media freedom,” the Gaza Media Office said in a statement, Al Jazeera reported.
The raid also comes just two days after the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted for an end to the Israeli occupation. The timing has raised eyebrows, leading many to believe that this is a deliberate attempt to silence dissent and suppress information about the ongoing conflict.
It’s important to note that Ramallah, where the raid took place, is under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority and not under Israeli control. This makes the raid even more concerning, as it signifies a blatant disregard for Palestinian autonomy.
