AS Roma CEO Resigns Amid Fan Outrage Over De Rossi Sacking

The drama surrounding AS Roma continues to unfold as Lina Souloukou, the club’s Chief Executive, has stepped down after facing a torrent of anger from fans. This comes just days after the sacking of legendary former player Daniele De Rossi, a move that ignited a firestorm of criticism and resentment among supporters.

Roma’s statement, while brief, acknowledges Souloukou’s dedication during a “critical period” for the club, wishing her well in her future endeavors. However, the real story lies beneath the surface. Italian media reports suggest police are investigating threats made against Souloukou following the appearance of a menacing banner at the club’s training ground.

Souloukou, a Greek sports lawyer, became the target of fan fury over De Rossi’s dismissal. The former Roma midfielder, who spent nearly two decades with the club, was appointed as head coach in January following Jose Mourinho’s firing. Despite his iconic status, De Rossi was unable to turn things around, resulting in a winless start to the Serie A season. His replacement is former Torino manager Ivan Juric, who will face his first test in charge when Roma hosts Udinese on Sunday.

It’s worth noting that Souloukou, hired in April 2023 by the American Friedkin family, owners of AS Roma, previously served as Chief Executive for Greek club Olympiakos Piraeus. Her departure highlights the tumultuous atmosphere surrounding the club, where the passion of the fans is matched only by the intensity of the emotions surrounding the team.
