The White House has issued a stern warning to Israel, advising against any further military escalation in the region. This comes amidst a surge in cross-border tensions between Israel and Lebanon, fueled by escalating exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group. The situation has sparked widespread fear of a full-scale war.
John Kirby, the White House national security spokesman, stated on Sunday that further escalation is not in Israel’s best interest. His statement follows Hezbollah’s declaration of entering a “new phase” in their long-standing battle against Israel, a conflict waged from across the Lebanese border since the outbreak of the Gaza war.
This new phase has been marked by a significant increase in cross-border attacks. Overnight, Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets towards northern Israel, prompting hundreds of thousands of Israelis to seek refuge in bomb shelters. The attacks followed a Friday air strike on Beirut, which tragically resulted in the deaths of 45 people, including several Hezbollah commanders. Earlier in the week, deadly explosions of communication devices across Lebanon left 39 dead and nearly 3,000 wounded.
Kirby emphasized the need for restraint and diplomacy, highlighting the potential risks and consequences of an all-out war. He confirmed that the United States is directly communicating this message to their Israeli counterparts. While acknowledging the heightened tensions, Kirby expressed hope for a diplomatic solution and stated that the US is actively working towards that outcome.
Meanwhile, the European Union has voiced deep concern over the escalating conflict, calling for an urgent ceasefire. Josep Borrell, the EU foreign policy chief, urged a cessation of hostilities along the demarcation line separating Israel and Lebanon, as well as in Gaza.
