iPhone 16 Pro Max Durability Test: Does Apple’s ‘Tougher’ Glass Really Hold Up?

The iPhone 16 Pro Max has hit the market, and the tech world is eager to see how it holds up. JerryRigEverything’s Zack Nelson, known for his brutal durability tests, has wasted no time in putting Apple’s latest flagship through its paces. His video, already clocking in over two million views, shows how the iPhone 16 Pro Max fares against a barrage of abuse, including scratches, burns, and bending.

It’s hard to watch Nelson drag the blade of a box cutter across the phone’s screen, but it does offer a glimpse into the toughness of the glass and frame when subjected to extreme conditions. Apple has claimed that the iPhone 16 Pro Max boasts a “Ceramic Shield” display that’s 50% tougher than the first-generation ceramic shield and twice as tough as the glass on other smartphones. However, Nelson still managed to scratch the screen with his tools, though it did require some effort.

Nelson doesn’t shy away from throwing in some playful digs at Apple during his test. As he examines the three camera lenses on the back of the phone, he quips, “The cameras are lined up this way to film in spatial video for the three people who own Vision Pros.” He then adds, “I would admit that filming at 120 frames per second in 4K would also be extremely impressive if Samsung hadn’t already done it first in their S24 Ultra. But you know how it is over at Apple — yesterday’s tech for tomorrow’s prices.”

As always, the naked flame comes out. Nelson holds it against the display of the iPhone 16 Pro Max for over 10 seconds. Surprisingly, the display shows no obvious signs of deterioration. However, Nelson reminds viewers that it’s best not to try this at home!

Last year’s bend test of the iPhone 15 Pro Max yielded a shocking result when the back glass shattered on the first bend. We were especially interested in seeing how the iPhone 16 Pro Max would hold up under pressure. Did it pass the bend test? You’ll have to watch the video to find out….
