Sharjah Launches First Phase of Electric Bus Service, Embracing Sustainable Transportation

Sharjah is taking a bold step towards a greener future with the launch of the first phase of its innovative electric bus service. This groundbreaking initiative, spearheaded by the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA), marks a significant milestone in the region’s commitment to sustainable public transportation.

The new service boasts a fleet of 10 state-of-the-art electric buses, meticulously chosen to meet the growing passenger demand identified through extensive research by SRTA in collaboration with the Intercity Transport Department. These buses, the latest King Long models, offer spacious seating for 41 passengers and come equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning and a specialized battery cooling system designed to withstand the UAE’s unique climate conditions.

The initial phase focuses on three intercity routes, strategically connecting Sharjah to major destinations like Dubai, Ajman, and Al Hamriyah. This carefully planned network aims to cater to the diverse needs of the community, ensuring convenient and accessible travel options.

This initiative underscores SRTA’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, aligning perfectly with the UAE’s ambitious Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. By investing in electric buses, SRTA aims to significantly reduce the environmental impact of its operations and encourage more residents to choose public transport over personal vehicles, thereby contributing to cleaner air and a quieter urban environment.

Engineer Youssef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, emphasized the careful selection of routes based on meticulous analysis, ensuring the service effectively meets the community’s needs. He reiterated SRTA’s dedication to promoting green transportation solutions and implementing sustainable practices within the public transport sector.

Looking ahead, SRTA has ambitious plans to expand its electric bus fleet in subsequent phases. The authority is actively exploring additional routes and services to enhance connectivity across Sharjah and beyond, aligning with the UAE and Sharjah government’s broader commitment to renewable energy and sustainable public transportation solutions.

The introduction of electric buses is anticipated to have a positive impact on the community, promoting cleaner air and reducing noise pollution. Residents and visitors can look forward to a reliable and eco-friendly transportation option that not only meets their travel needs but also contributes to a healthier environment.

The launch of this first phase of Sharjah’s electric bus service is a testament to the region’s dedication to environmental stewardship and innovation. With ongoing enhancements and expansions planned, the future of public transport in Sharjah looks bright and eco-friendly.
