Kia America is taking a significant step towards enhancing the charging experience for its electric vehicle (EV) owners by introducing North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters for its popular EV6 and EV9 models. Starting in early 2025, Kia EV6 and EV9 customers who took delivery of their vehicles from September 4, 2024, onwards will receive a complimentary NACS adapter, granting them access to a vast network of over 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers across the United States.
This move will dramatically increase the charging options available to Kia EV owners, making it easier and more convenient for them to travel long distances and find charging stations. Kia estimates that this expansion will increase the number of accessible DC fast chargers by more than 83 percent, providing greater peace of mind and range confidence for EV owners.
The NACS adapters will be offered in three types: NACS to CCS1, CCS1 to NACS, and J1772 to NACS. The NACS to CCS1 adapter allows existing Kia EVs to charge on NACS DC fast chargers, while the CCS1 to NACS adapter enables NACS-equipped Kia EVs to charge on existing CCS DC chargers. Finally, the J1772 to NACS adapter allows NACS-equipped Kia EVs to AC-charge on existing Level 2 chargers, further expanding charging possibilities.
Kia is going beyond simply providing the adapters; they are also making it easier for customers to use the NACS network. In early 2025, Kia EV owners will be able to use the Kia Access app to locate, navigate to, and pay for charging at NACS stations. This seamless integration with the Kia Access app allows drivers to locate available charging stations, check their status, and pay for charging all within the familiar interface of their EV infotainment system or smartphone.
This initiative by Kia America demonstrates their commitment to providing their EV customers with a truly comprehensive and convenient charging experience. With this expanded access to the NACS network, Kia EV owners can now enjoy greater range confidence and flexibility on their electric journeys.
