Delhi Airport to Get India’s First Air Train System: A Game-Changer for Passengers

Get ready for a whole new level of convenience at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport! The airport is set to introduce India’s first air train system, promising a smooth and efficient travel experience for millions of passengers. This innovative project, also known as an Automated People Mover (APM), is designed to connect Terminals 1, 2, 3, Aerocity, and Cargo City, creating a seamless network within the airport complex.

The air train will run on an elevated track, covering a distance of approximately 7.7 kilometers. It will feature four stations, making it easy for passengers to navigate between different terminals, parking areas, and other facilities. This new system will replace the current DTC bus service, offering a much faster and more reliable mode of transport.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) has issued a tender for the construction of this ambitious project, estimated to cost around ₹2,000 crore. Bids are expected to be submitted in October and November, with the contract being awarded based on factors like cost, revenue-sharing models, and viability gap funding. The air train is anticipated to be operational by the end of 2027, significantly enhancing the overall passenger experience at the airport.

The air train system is expected to have a profound impact on the airport’s operations. It will not only provide efficient connectivity but also enhance passenger convenience, improve the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) score, and contribute to a reduction in the airport’s carbon footprint. This is particularly crucial given the airport’s ever-increasing passenger numbers. With an annual passenger count exceeding seven crore, the airport is projected to see a doubling of passenger traffic in the next six to seven years. The air train system will play a pivotal role in ensuring smooth and efficient connectivity for all travelers, keeping pace with the anticipated growth.

This project is a testament to the airport’s commitment to providing a world-class travel experience. The air train system promises to transform the way passengers navigate the airport, offering a faster, more convenient, and more sustainable mode of transport. It is a significant step forward for India’s aviation sector and is sure to set a new benchmark for airport infrastructure in the country.
